Fall 2010

I'm a terrible blogger. I get it. 3 posts last year? None until October this year? Yep, I'm definitely bad at this. In fact, I am supposed to blog at work too -- "Notes From the Principal" -- and I'm pretty bad at that. I sure do hold out hope, though, particulalry since this blog is about a place and a dream that feeds my soul. Really. In fact, on our last trip up a couple of weeks ago, on the (8 hour) ride home, Jon noted, "I feel recharged, revived." We always seem to breathe a little deeper, pause a little longer and walk a little slower for a day or two after we return. It's why we bought our land, and on each return trip we feel more at home, and each time we board the ferry to return to our Chicago home, we feel the ties that connect us to each place pulled a little tighter.

So, I'll give a quick update on the status of our plans and then let the pictures (in my next post -- after I downoad them) from our most recent trip speak for themselves. We've spent the winter going back and forth with the LaPointe Zoning Commission (basically, one very nice, soft-spoken gal) about where we can and can't build on our property. We ran into some challenges with our property being a non-conforming lot, which we've now overcome. Now, we're discovering that some of our property may be designated as wetlands, which makes it beautiful, but limits where we can actually build. We are fairly certain, at this point, that we'll have the construction site staked out and will be ready to break ground by spring. If all things go according to plan, by July 1st I'll return to Madeline Island and stay in the first, very tiny, cottage we're planning to build at 890 South Shore!
